About Us
Chatterbox Films is an independent film company based in Nottingham, UK, co-founded by Josh Kemp & James Newton.
Founded on a mission statement to create new, exciting stories, we use that love of film and story-telling to innovate and experiment. As if to showcase our ambitious drive, our first major work was a musical feature called BREAKING THE HABIT which stretched the limits of the format, using the close intimacy of the film medium and slamming it together with the raw emotional hit of musical theatre.
Who we are
James began shooting and editing videos as a teenager. Several years later, he earned a first class honours degree in Television Production, also winning a Royal Television Society award for directing the best factual entertainment programme. After working on several TV shows, James soon moved into feature films, notably working with Sam Mendes and Roger Deakins on ‘Skyfall’ starring Daniel Craig. James also produces and directs his own short and feature films, alongside Josh.
When not producing dramas, James creates corporate video. The quality of his work has often been reflected in the clients which include Steinway & Sons, Audi, Archery GB, NHS, Chatsworth House and Bradford Unesco World City of Film.
Josh Kemp is a film maker, singer songwriter, composer and writer who after years touring the UK and Europe met James in an audition for a TV pilot he was directing, HOOD. Josh landed the title role of Robin Hood and so began a creative partnership that led them to forming CHATTERBOX FILMS. Around the same time filming began Josh started working on a new musical idea and after hours chatting over a coffee in the cold an idea formed in their minds. Leading to BREAKING THE HABIT, their first feature project. Josh has worked as a composer and writer with HBO (Westworld), BBC (2018 Pantomime), Nottingham Playhouse and represented Nottingham as part of its Olympic Torch Ceremony.
